WeChat (aka Weixin) is a multipurpose social networking app in China. Now, there is a function "Wallet" setting that allows users to pay for a number of different items through their smart phone, including cinema tickets, taxis and group discount deals. This works even if the users only have debit or ATM cards.

As long as foreigners have a Chinese bank card, they can use this feature. Additionally, the set-up process is in English (provided you downloaded the English-language version of WeChat).

Here’s step by step of how to link your bank card to your WeChat account.

1. Open your Wechat.

2. Press the 'Me' button at the bottom of the screen, then tap the 'Wallet' option.

3. This is the main menu that you will use to access different options once your card has been set up. Press ‘Wallet’ again.

4. Select 'Add a Card'.

5. Type in the number across the middle of your bank card. Once you're done, tap 'Next'.

6. Now, type in your card information, it should be the exact same information that you gave to your bank when you opened your account.

Your name should be the same as the full name printed on your passport. Since it depends on whatever the clerk typed when you were registering before, you may need to input it all in capitals, or all in lowercase or without space for it to register properly. To be sure, you can go to your bank and double- check how they have inputted your name.

Next, type ' ID type' to select identification you used to open your bank account (usually passport will be set to 'ID Card' as default').

Finally, type in the phone number you gave your bank and make sure to tick the ' Accept' 'User Agreement' before you tap 'Next'.

7. You will be brought to the following screen. However you still need to wait before fill in the blank.

8. WeChat will send a message to your phone with an authorization code (see image below). This will only be sent if you put the same phone number with the one that you used to register in the bank before. If you gave the correct number but still didn't get a code, there is a link at the bottom of the 'Verify Mobile' page that will resend it.

9. Now, you need to add a security number in case your phone is lost. Type in a six-digit passcode that you can easily remember.

10. Tap 'Next' and your card will be added to your wallet.

11. In order to use it, you need to put some money in your balance. Tap 'balance' to got to the menu.

12. Tap 'Top Up' to transfer money from your bank card to your Wechat Wallet Balance.

13. Input the amount of money that you wish (less than 3000 RMB per day)

*Setting Up WeChat Wallet When You Don't Have the Wallet Option.

For whatever reasons, sometimes the Wallet menu just doesn't show up in the "Me" tab. People who set up WeChat outside of China (perhaps before actually arriving here) typically face the same problem. Here's how you can activate the Wallet feature on your account if it does not show:

• Find a friend who does have WeChat Wallet and can use it to send money.

• Ask them to send some money to you via WeChat (it could be 1RMB).

• When you try to accept the transfer, WeChat will require you to set up the Wallet feature before the transfer can be completed.

• Once the Wallet is set up, the wallet feature will be activated in your account and will now always show under the "Me" tab.
